Every day new brands enticing you with their products, your favorite celebrities promoting new products, and a plethora of options available in the market, choosing a right skin care product has become a big deal.
And the biggest mistake most of us make is picking up a product without understanding its ingredients, function and most important without knowing our own skin type.
So understanding your skin type, how to take care of your skin type and which ingredients you should look in a product as per your skin type is what we are going to cover in this post.
The First Rule: Know Your Skin
Always check if the product is meant for your skin type or not before buying. And for that
let’s first understand a bit more about your skin type and how to take care of it.-
Normal Skin: With an even tone, it is not dry nor oily. However more prone to aging and wrinkles.
Oily Skin: Skin which produces more oil. Such skin type is always hydrated. However, more oil production makes it prone to pimples and other skin problems.
Combination Skin: Skin can be dry or normal in some areas while oily in others, such as the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin).
Dry Skin: Skin which is dry, itchy and flaky due to less oil production.
Sensitive Skin: Skin which gets irritated, inflamed or red very easily and needs special care.
How To Identify Your Skin Type :
Cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild cleanser or face-wash and let it dry. Do not apply anything over it. After 30 minutes, examine your cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead for any shine. If your skin feels tight, you have a dry skin. And if there is noticeable shine on your nose and forehead, then you have a combination skin. If there is shine on your cheeks in addition to your forehead and nose, you most likely have oily skin.
Another method is – Use a blotting paper on the different areas of your face. If it picked up little to no oil, then your skin is dry. If the blotting sheet reveals oil from the forehead and nose areas, your skin is a normal/combination. And if the blotting paper is filled with oil, then you have oily skin.
Learn How To Take Care Of Your Skin Type –
Oily Skin :
As your skin is already oily use oil-free products. Look for an oil-free product with the hyaluronic acid. Mattifying products are best for such skin.
Use a face wash that contains salicylic acid.
Reduce the use of cosmetics as much as possible-even the non-comedogenic ones can promote excess oil.
Do not use heavy oil-based creams, harsh scrubs etc. Instead, use gel moisturizers or water-based serums.
Dry Skin :
Dry skin produces less oil, so moisture is a key to treat dry skin. Use oil-based cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup. Use lotions and rich creams to nourish your skin cells. But do not overuse it since skin can only absorb only a small amount of moisture.
Look for products that aren’t alcohol-based or contain sulfates which can dry out skin by stripping its natural oils.
Do not use products such as clay or charcoal masks or cleanser with too much leather or foam.
You can use thick moisturizing cream, facial oils, mild cleanser or products with lactic acid.
Combination Skin :
Since your skin needs different treatment in different areas. So use a mild cleanser and moisturizer on your cheeks since it is dry area and a more stringent product on your T-zone to cut through the oil.
Normal Skin :
Normal skin does not require much work. So lighter lotions, creams, and serums are ideal for this skin type as it’s already in balance. Do not overuse products and do not use any products which can shift your skin to dry or oily. So avoid harsh cleanser, heavy moisturizers.
One thing you need to make sure is such skin is very prone to aging. So include some anti-aging products in your routine.
Sensitive Skin -
Sensitive skin gets irritated, red and itchy easily.
So always test products on your inner forearm before applying them to your face, or you can apply products behind one of your ears to check skin sensitivity. Only if your skin shows no signs of sensitivity then apply products on your face.
Use products that are non-irritating and non-sensitizing and free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, sulfate detergents, phthalates, urea, DEA or TEA, as these ingredients can result in redness and itchiness.
Read Fine Lines Before Buying A Product –
Keep your objective in mind and your skin type. As this will decide if you need product for exfoliation, mattifying or hydration.
Look for ingredients and their amount. Also, check if the product is “noncomedogenic” as it means it won’t clog pores.
Make sure that products contain antioxidants agents, skin-replenishing and skin restoring ingredients as per your skin type.
Basic Routine Every Skin Type Can Follow –
Use a mild face cleanser like Cetaphil, which neither makes skin dry or oily.
Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30. (choose sunscreen as per your skin type gel based, matte or water-based)
In a daytime, cream look for the presence of Vitamin C in form of L-ascorbic acid. Its antioxidants properties make it one of the best anti-aging, skin restoring and skin replenishing agent. It works against sun damage too. Your product should contain at least 10 percent L-ascorbic acid.
In night products look for the presence of glycolic acid or retinol, or prescription Retin-A to help smooth lines and wrinkles.
As not every product is designed for every kind of skin. So understanding your skin type and picking products as per that will make a huge difference in your skin.
